Nine persons, including four
siblings, were burnt beyond recognition, Monday evening, in a multiple car
accident which occurred in Bauchi.
The fatal accident involved three
cars travelling along the Bauchi-Jos highway.
Spokesperson of the Federal Road
Safety Commission, FRSC, Bauchi State Command, Ibrahim Geidam, said all three
vehicles carried a total of about twenty persons.
“Three vehicles carrying about
twenty travellers were involved, a Mitsubishi bus, a Volkswagen station wagon
and a Peugeot car” Mr. Geidam said.
He said the vehicles caught fire
after a head on collision in Gadam village, few kilometres from Bauchi town.
Mr. Geidam said one of the vehicles
was carrying about ten members of the same family, who were on their way to
Bauchi from Jos.
He said that eight of those in the
bus are siblings and four of them died on the spot.
The other siblings and
other survivors were hurt and taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa
Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Mr Gaidam, said the accident was
caused by wrongful overtaking by one of the vehicles.
“The Volkswagen Passat and the bus
collided head-on, while the Peugeot, which was coming from behind, hit the two
vehicles. The Passat and bus caught fire upon impact, burning to death, nine
persons, out of whom six were burnt beyond recognition,” Mr. Gaidam explained.
The father of the eight siblings,
Abubakar Fulani, hurriedly left Jos to get to the scene of the accident. He was
however, intercepted by robbers, who blocked the way in an armed operation for
over two hours.
